WOMEX starts in a few days in Katowice - the capital of the region called Silesia, so it's high time to get more acquainted with a Polish folk music scene.
To start with, it is remarkably varied in styles and in the degree of folklore inspiration. You can find any combinations and genres - classical music, jazz, rock, electronic, psychodelic and even metal. Some of the bands explore not only "Polish roots" music, but also Celtic, Balkan, African, Latin America and even... Maritime ones. Some of them extremelly change tradition, whereas other prefer to be tied to it with strong bonds. Nevertheless, the traditional music from Poland and all over the world remains the main source of inspiration. You will have a chance to hear some of Polish folk groups during WOMEX - especially at Kato Connections Stage and other events.
Our portal was founded in 2010, but the members of the editorial has been actively monitoring the Polish folk stage much longer - since 2000. On this basis we can say that lately the scene has been flourishing, with more bands and different inspirations, ideas to play music deriving its roots from tradition. We are keeping our fingers crossed, hoping that WOMEX in Katowice will help to promote our folk music abroad!
Summing up, our editorial team, with Partner Instytut Muzyki i Tańca, has prepared the concise presentations of the most outstanding Polish folk groups
including their bio, line-up, discography and the links to the samples of music. This is only a base material, for more detailed information please visit the bands' websites. It is also worth to mention that we didn't cover all of the groups so this is only a part of the scene - the most active groups for the last few years and the representative for each part of the folk cake.
Hope you will enjoy your stay and folk music from Poland!
And we are looking forward to seeing you in Katowice.
