Teodora, for whom do artists in Bulgaria create popfolk music? I’m asking, because I know in Bulgaria this kind of music isn’t very popular and young people prefer listening to western musicians. On the other hand tourists from Poland like me fall in love with these Turkish rhythms.
First of all I’d like to inform you and your readers that this is not so. The popfolk music is very, very popular in Bulgaria. I don’t say that because I sing such type of music but because a recent research shows that about 80% of the people listen to popfolk music. People like this music cause on one hand the Balkan rhythms are in our blood – we live here and that is logical, and on the other hand, the lyrics express what people like to hear. So this music helps the people to enjoy and forget about the everyday stress and have a nice time. And that is the most important mission of the music – to entertain.This rhythms are Balkan not only Turkish. They mix all the Balkan cultures and sounds. The melodies may have Greek, Romanian, Turkish, Serbian or Traditional Bulgarian origin.
In Poland people don’t have a possibility to hear music made by eastern artists. None of our radio station plays popfolk. What is your opinion about promoting popfolk songs there?
I think it would be great me and my colleagues t have the opportunity to promote our music and in other foreign countries. We already have success in some of the Balkan countries and I think it will be very nice to promote it and in Poland, why not. But that doesn’t depend only on us, on artist. The radiostations should give us the opportunity to play our music, we should have the ability to make concerts in your country for to gain more popularity and so on. This is not so simple. If it depends on me only I would do it right away. ☺
I know that besides chalga you also sing Greek, Macedonian and Bulgarian national traditional songs. In which repertoire you feel yourself the most convenient?
I’ve graduated in a music school in here with profile Traditional Bulgarian folklore music and I always sing such songs on my concerts. I sing also Greek, Serbian and others. But I have to confess that I adore the traditional folk songs most of all.
You have travelled a lot around Balkan countries (Greece, Turkey, Croatia, FYR Macedonia) and have performed. Have you ever thought about visit middle-eastern or western countries, for example Poland in the nearest future and give a concert there?
Of course. I would like to visit your country cause I’ve never been there. If I receive an invitation to make a concert in Poland I would come with a great pleasure.
Like I mentioned before in Poland you are known only by narrow group of fans. Though here exist some websites like folk24.pl, which are interested in widening the audience of Balkan music. I’d like to know if there is something we can do to help you become also a star not only recognized in Balkan area.
That really surprised me. I didn’t know that such site exists. I’m really very happy to hear that. That once again shows that there are no borders, no limits for the music. I listened to an interview with you made in Casino Princess in Macedonia. Unfortunately, I do not speak Bulgarian yet, but I understood you’ve started learning some English. Can I ask what is your progress in speaking English?
Yes, I did. Well to tell you the truth I want very much to learn to speak fluent English but to my great regret I don’t have enough free time to do that. And you know that learning a foreign language demands a lot of time…
